F.A.Q.

Where should I look for mouse tracks?

Check along baseboards, behind appliances, in dusty or undisturbed areas like basements and attics, near food storage, and around utility entry points. Mice follow the same paths repeatedly and leave visible evidence.

If you have a sneaking suspicion there’s a mouse in your house, but you haven’t confirmed it yet, it helps to know where to look. The earlier you find the problem, the better your odds of preventing a serious infestation.

Mice are creatures of habit. Once they establish a route between their nest and a food or water source, they follow it almost exactly the same way every time. This repetitive travel pattern leaves physical evidence in several forms.

Dusty surfaces, if you have any, will make it easier to spot mice. A few good places to check are the tops of pipes in the basement, ledges along foundation walls, the area behind your water heater, and any shelf or surface in the garage or attic that collects dust.

As you seek out evidence of mice, you’ll find that footprints are small, and their front paws show four toes and their back paws show five. You’ll often see these align with tail drag marks between them, which will appear as a thin line running through the center of the trail.

Along baseboards and walls, look for grease marks. Mice have oily fur, and as they run the same route night after night, their bodies leave dark smudge marks on surfaces they brush against. These rub marks are especially visible on light-colored baseboards, door frames, and the edges of gaps mice squeeze through.

Near food sources, look for droppings. Mouse droppings are dark, about the size of a grain of rice, and pointed at both ends. Check inside cabinets, behind the stove, under the refrigerator, and around pet food storage. Fresh droppings are dark and soft; old ones are gray and crumble when touched.

Also keep an eye out for gnaw marks. These can tell you where mice are getting in or expanding access. Check around pipes, wires, and any opening where utilities penetrate the wall. Shredded paper, insulation, or fabric stuffed into a hidden corner indicates nesting.

If you see established travel routes, you probably have a serious rodent population. And if that’s the case, Mosquito Squad of Bergen Passaic can help with rodent control services. A professional will come to your home and figure out how rodents are getting in and where they’re hiding. Then they’ll come up with an exclusion and treatment plan based on what they find.
