What Colors Make You More Likely to Be Bitten by Mosquitoes?

December 19, 2023

Although mosquitoes are some of the most common pests humans encounter on a daily basis, it has taken years of research to narrow down why some people seem to suffer more mosquito bites than others. Past research has indicated that odor plays a significant role, and some people are probably more or less vulnerable to mosquitoes due to the unique chemicals they emit from their skin. While this is certainly an interesting fact, you’re probably wondering how mosquitoes target their victims in the first place.

We humans only perceive a small percentage of the stimuli that exist around us, and our sense of smell is particularly limited. Mosquitoes, on the other hand, are exceptionally talented at detecting carbon dioxide (CO2), the gas emitted by animals during the process of respiration. When a mosquito detects CO2, the insect enters a targeting mode, where they use their visual sensors to locate their next meal. In a recent study using colored dots, results indicated that once mosquitoes detected CO2, they were far more likely to target dots that were colored what we perceive to be red, orange, cyan, and black. Interestingly, green, purple, blue, and white dots were largely ignored by mosquitoes in the study. Humans, no matter their skin color, all emit a red-orange signature to mosquitoes, which likely explains why similarly colored clothing could make you look irresistible to these pests.

However, wearing the colors mosquitoes ignore probably won’t help too much either. For true defense against mosquitoes, you should consult the professionals.

Importance of using a Ramsey mosquito service

As nice as it would be to simply wear certain colors to avoid attracting mosquitoes, the reality isn’t nearly as simple. Mosquitoes are particularly troublesome because it can be difficult to defend against a flying pest, and they are known to carry dangerous diseases. Although mosquito-borne diseases in the U.S. are typically rare, rising temperatures are contributing to an expanded mosquito habitat that allows disease-carrying mosquitoes to grow in numbers. To defend against this growing threat, Mosquito Squad offers surefire solutions that will dramatically reduce the mosquito population on your property.

How do we do this? Since 2005, we’ve used a treatment called barrier protection mist that has a proven track record of decreasing your yard’s mosquito population by up to 90%. No mosquito control can claim to eliminate every mosquito in your vicinity, that’s just unrealistic and dishonest. However, we offer top-of-the-line services that we tailor specifically to you. In addition to treating your yard’s boundary, we can also create layered defense by treating areas prone to breeding mosquitoes and other outdoor areas that you’d like to keep mosquitoes away from. Many of our clients like secondary treatments around their pools and outdoor gathering spaces that are prime targets for mosquitoes. With your premier Ramsey mosquito service, you can keep mosquitoes to a minimum and enjoy the outdoors like never before.
