One way that stink bugs communicate is by moving their abdomens to vibrate plants and leaves beneath them.
Stink bugs, or shield bugs, have a broad, flat body, small head and long, striped antennae. They vary in color depending on the species but are commonly brown or green. Stink bugs are solitary insects and don’t travel in colonies. If you see a group of stink bugs, it’s likely because a food source or warm area is drawing a crowd. They are attracted to warmth, light, and the smell of ripe fruits and vegetables.
Stink bugs are found throughout the United States, especially in agricultural areas and gardens. During fall, they gather on sunny sides of buildings and enter homes through cracks and openings. One reason they make a bad houseguest is the odor they release when they feel threatened or are crushed. This scent is used to fend off natural predators like spiders, birds and wasps. They should also be unwelcome in your yard because they feed by piercing plant tissues and sucking out the juices, which can damage fruits and vegetables.
Common types of stink bugs in the US include the brown marmorated stink bug and the green stink bug. Get to know these common pests!
The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive insect and agricultural nuisance due to the large number of host plants it feeds on. It has a marbled pattern on its back and alternating light and dark bands on its antennae and the edges of its body. Brown marmorated stink bugs are very common throughout the Eastern and Midwestern US and are commonly found on doors, windows, and other entry points.
The green stink bug is bright green with a narrow orange or yellow border along the edge of its body. It is native to North America and can be found throughout the US. The green stink bug targets crops, like soybeans, tomatoes, and corn.
