The field itself is unlikely to be an issue, as open, sunny, mowed ground is a poor mosquito habitat. But agricultural land often comes with drainage ditches, irrigated low spots, livestock water, and shaded woodlot edges, all of which tend to worsen mosquito pressure.
It’s tempting to assume that rural areas have mosquito problems just by their very nature. But that’s not quite right. The reality is that mosquitoes respond to water and shade. They’re not concerned with zoning laws.
Open fields don’t have much to offer mosquitoes. There is full sun, moving air, and low humidity. All of that is actively hostile to adult mosquitoes. They lose moisture easily and dry out, and they can’t fly well in wind. Mowed hayfields or established row crops in midsummer are not hospitable to mosquitoes. But the shaded, humid margins of open fields like fencerow brush and shelterbelts are a different story.
Farms have a lot of things that suburbs don’t. They have drainage ditches and field tiles that hold standing water for days after rain. They have irrigation that pools in low corners. There are also livestock tanks and old equipment that collects rainwater. Retention ponds can cause all kinds of mosquito problems. Floodwater mosquitoes love all of these places because they allow them to lay eggs in soil that dries out and then, when a rain comes and refills the container or low spot, the eggs can all hatch around the same time. That can make a rural property go from tolerable to miserable in about three days.

Keep the yard’s vegetation trimmed and sunny, and concentrate treatment on the shaded resting habitat at the yard’s edges. This is where mosquitoes tend to come off the surrounding land to settle in.
