The elm seed bug is a newer invasive pest in the US. It was first discovered in Idaho in 2012. It is native to parts of Europe, including the Mediterranean region.
Elm seed bugs are small insects with dark brown or black bodies and rusty-red markings on their wings. They are often mistaken for small boxelder bugs. Elm seed bugs feed mostly on elm tree seeds and leaves but can also be found on oak, maple, and ash trees. When it is especially warm during the summer, elm seed bugs seek shelter in homes. They also enter homes in cold months to stay safe during their winter dormancy.
