When threatened, Asian beetles release a yellow fluid from their leg joints to deter predators. This defensive behavior is known as reflex bleeding.
Invasive Asian beetles were originally introduced to the US by the Department of Agriculture to help control mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. They’re now found in agricultural and wooded areas in most states. These beetles reproduce quickly, with females laying clusters of 20-30 yellow eggs on the underside of leaves. Once hatched, Asian beetle larvae are black with orange markings on their back.
