  • Do mosquito treatments kill existing mosquitoes or just prevent them?

F.A.Q.

Do mosquito treatments kill existing mosquitoes or just prevent them?

Professional barrier treatments do both. They kill mosquitoes on contact during the initial application and leave a residual layer on vegetation that continues to control mosquitoes for about 21 days.

If you’ve ever dealt with a serious mosquito problem, you know that you want them gone today, tomorrow, and next week. A treatment that only handles the existing mosquitoes won’t help you tomorrow. A treatment that only prevents new ones wouldn’t help you today. So that’s why any effective mosquito treatment needs to do both at the same time.

When mosquito treatment is being applied, a technician will use a backpack mist blower to push product deep into the vegetation and shaded areas where mosquitoes rest. Mosquitoes that are present in those areas at the time of the treatment are contacted directly and knocked down. This is the reason most homeowners notice a dramatic drop in mosquito activity within hours of a treatment.

After the treatment is first applied and some mosquitoes are knocked down right then and there, the product binds to leaf surfaces and other treated areas. There it remains, actively working, over the following weeks. This is why you can still enjoy far fewer mosquitoes on your property even two weeks after the treatment is applied.

This is also why treatment needs to be topped off on a regular basis. The effect degrades gradually over about 21 days. If you wait too long between treatments, the gap in between allows mosquitoes to reassert themselves and give rise to the next generation of biting pests.
