F.A.Q.

Does rain make my mosquito treatment ineffective?

Once a professional barrier treatment has dried on foliage and surfaces, normal rainfall won’t wash it away. Drying takes about 30 minutes.

If you’ve scheduled mosquito treatment only for it to start raining an hour later, you might be left wondering. Is the treatment still going to work, or did it simply wash away?

Professional mosquito treatments usually go on vegetation and other places that mosquitoes rest during the day. Mosquitoes stay in humid places, so any treatment used needs to stand up to water, and can’t just disappear after the first drop of rain. Mosquito treatments stick around as a residue that continues to work over time. A typical afternoon rain shower, or even a steady rain, won’t wash it away as the product will have bonded to the foliage by the time the rain comes in.

For the most part, treatments are good to go after 30 minutes, but if the bottom falls out before then, the treatment might need to be reapplied. This is why most professional applicators will check the weather before treating and will reschedule if heavy rain is on the way. If the unexpected happens and a serious storm rolls through right after application, most providers will re-treat at no additional charge.

It’s still a good idea to keep an eye on the weather if mosquitoes are on your mind, though. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, which rainfall is very good at creating. Heavy rain can fill gutters, create puddles in low spots, and top off anything that holds water, giving mosquitoes fresh breeding sites. If you find any containers in your yard holding standing water after a rain, tip them over.
