F.A.Q.

Is outdoor pest control enough to prevent indoor pests?

Outdoor pest control significantly reduces the population around your home, which lowers the chance of pests making it inside. But it’s even more effective when you also seal entry points and eliminate indoor attractants.

You may hope that treating your yard will get rid of ants in the kitchen or spiders in the garage. And while it will definitely help, the reality is more nuanced. Outdoor treatment alone can’t solve all pest problems.

Most indoor pest problems start outside, so outdoor treatment is always a good place to start. You can see this in many different species. Ants forage from outdoor colonies and go inside through small gaps. Spiders are looking for meals, so they follow insects who in turn gravitate to the warmth and light of your home. Rodents move from the yard to wall voids as temperatures drop. Even mosquitoes, who otherwise like to stay around standing water where they can breed, will slip in through open doors and torn screens. Needless to say, there are many reasons why reducing the pest population around the perimeter of your home means fewer pests are positioned to get inside in the first place.

But outdoor treatment alone isn’t enough to stop the pests from coming inside. It doesn't seal the gaps under your door, around your pipes, or along your window frames. It doesn't address the crumbs behind the toaster that are drawing ants or the moisture under the sink that attracts roaches. And it doesn't control pests that have already made their way indoors.

This is why the most effective indoor prevention involves a couple more steps. The first is exclusion, or blocking entry points by sealing cracks and gaps around the foundation, utility penetrations, doors, and windows. The second is reducing attractants by fixing leaks to eliminate standing moisture, storing food in sealed containers, and keeping surfaces clean.
