Yes. Gaps around vents, soffits, and roofline materials can provide stink bugs with routes into protected attic spaces.
Ventilation, as long as it is in good working order, generally won’t let a bunch of stink bugs inside. But a lot of vents and soffits fall into disrepair, and when this happens it can be hard to spot the defects.
If stink bugs are getting into vents or soffits, it’s most likely because there is damaged or missing screening or loose materials. You may even have gaps around the vents or soffits themselves. Stink bugs can find those gaps and exploit them in order to get inside.
Upper parts of a house provide many possible access points, including soffit joints, attic vents, fascia transitions, siding, and roofline seams. All it takes for stink bugs to get inside in great numbers is a gap in one of these. Then once inside, bugs may settle in the attic or move into nearby wall voids.
For the most part, once inside, stink bugs go dormant. But sunny winter days or even high indoor temperatures can wake them up, and they’ll start emerging indoors. That doesn’t mean you have a new infestation. What’s more likely is that an old infestation got reactivated by higher temperatures.
If you want to keep stink bugs from taking over your space this winter, start by checking upper exterior areas before their activity peaks in the fall. Then repair damaged vent screening and seal appropriate gaps, but be sure to not block airflow the home needs in the process.
