F.A.Q.

How Many Eggs Does a Tick Lay at One Time?

Astonishingly, a single female tick can lay thousands of eggs at once - several thousand, depending on the species.

That’s a pretty impressive feat for a pest no bigger than a watermelon seed. While ticks might be tiny, their reproductive potential is anything but. Several tick species can be found throughout the Nashville area, in yards, wooded areas, and other outdoor spaces.

The good news is that not every tick egg will develop into an adult. However, one female can certainly contribute to a whole lot of future generations of ticks.

How Many Eggs Do Different Tick Species Lay?

The number of eggs a female tick lays depends on her species, as well as how successfully she has fed. Therefore, the numbers can be anywhere within a pretty large range.

  • Blacklegged ticks (deer ticks): Typically lay between 2,000 and 3,000 eggs at once
  • Lone star ticks: Can lay between 4,000 and 5,000 eggs at once
  • American dog ticks: Can lay between 4,000 and 6,500 eggs at once

These three species of ticks are found in Tennessee. However, their populations and distributions vary.

Where Do Ticks Lay Their Thousands of Eggs?

Fortunately, ticks don’t lay their eggs on people or pets. After feeding and mating, a female hard tick will detach from her host to find a sheltered location to deposit her eggs, which are typically laid in clusters. This might be within leaf litter, beneath ground vegetation, or any place that provides favorable shelter and moisture.

Once the female completes this process, she dies. Reproduction is a one-time event for these hard tick species. But it can be impactful on tick populations, nonetheless.
