F.A.Q.

What does a mosquito barrier spray do?

A mosquito barrier spray knocks down the mosquitoes present at application. Then it bonds to the foliage where mosquitoes rest and keeps reducing the population for about three weeks.

The name is a little misleading. “Spray” suggests something being misted into the air that drifts off with the breeze. There are some mosquito control products that work that way, but barrier sprays (barrier treatments) are not like that.

The idea behind barrier treatment is simple. Mosquitoes cannot spend the bulk of the day in the hot, dry sun. They will dry out. So they stay in humid, shaded areas until it’s a better time. That includes places like undersides of leaves, and deep in shrubs and ivy. They don’t have a choice in this, and that’s the fact that barrier treatments hinge upon.

A technician applies the treatment directly onto those resting surfaces, working through the property's shaded foliage, plant beds, and perimeter growth. Two things follow. The mosquitoes sheltering there when the treatment goes on get knocked down immediately, which is why most homeowners notice a difference within about a day. Then the treatment bonds to the foliage and stays active, so mosquitoes arriving later, hatching nearby or drifting in from down the road, land on treated surfaces and go down too. This lasts for about three weeks at a time.

Right when the treatment wears off, that’s when it’s applied again. Kept on that rhythm through the long, humid summer, barrier treatments don’t just interrupt mosquitoes, but suppress the population continuously. The same logic applies to ticks.

What a barrier spray doesn't do: reach 100%, or stop every mosquito that flies in from an untreated marsh or a neighbor's birdbath the day it arrives. Still, reducing mosquitoes by up to 90%, as barrier treatments are known to do, is enough to make a big difference in how much time you can enjoy outside.

If you’re tired of dealing with mosquitoes, Mosquito Squad of Middlesex, New London & Windham County can help. Mosquito Squad applies EPA-registered barrier treatment where mosquitoes hide. This can help you to protect your yard with up to 90% reduction in mosquito activity on a recurring 21-day cycle.
