F.A.Q.

Can stink bugs get in around window frames and attic vents?

Yes. Small gaps around window frames, vents, and surrounding building materials can give stink bugs a route into protected parts of a home.

Stink bugs are a lot more noticeable around buildings in the fall. This is right around the time when adults start searching for sheltered places to spend the colder months. So they tend to all mass on the same walls at the same time.

Stink bugs and other overwintering insects are annoying when they get inside. But for an indoor infestation to be possible, they at least need to have some way in. Windows and attic vents are definitely worth taking a close look at, but the actual opening may not be the vent or window itself. It might be the gap around it too.

Window frames can develop small gaps where trim, siding, and caulk tend to meet. Screens can also become torn or poorly fitted. Around attic vents, protective screening may be damaged, loose or missing. Seams can develop between the vent and nearby siding, soffits, or trim. Once stink bugs get beyond the exterior, then they start to settle into attics and wall voids where they’re relatively undisturbed.

Homeowners who have infestations often find out because they see stink bugs crawling across windows in the middle of winter. Warm days, or even just indoor heating, can wake them up and make them think it’s time to go outside. That might make it look like the infestation just appeared, but in reality, they’ve been there for a while and have just become active.

Prevention is easiest before the bugs have a chance to move indoors. Inspect window and door frames, screens, attic and soffit vents, siding transitions, rooflines, and utility penetrations. Repair damaged screening and seal appropriate gaps, but do not block vents or other openings the building requires for proper airflow.
