As your mosquito prevention experts in northern Alabama, we want to arm you with the latest news regarding Zika. The more informed you are about the threats posed by Zika, the better prepared you will be for this health threat during the warm summer months when mosquitoes are active.
Mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus have made their way to various parts of the world and it's important for everyone to protect themselves against the threat posed by the virus. In other countries, Zika is believed to be responsible for a birth defect called encephalopathy. Pregnant women who contracted the Zika virus through mosquito bites have delivered babies with encephalopathy, a condition where the baby's brain doesn't fully develop. The result is brain damage and babies with very small heads.
Researchers are continuing to examine the Zika-encephalopathy link to determine how to best prevent more babies from being affected.
At this point, the prevention of and protection against mosquitoes will go a long way to keeping Zika at bay. While Zika has been making headlines in recent months, mosquitoes also carry other deadly diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and the West Nile virus. While most of these conditions are rare in the U.S., you should still take steps to provide mosquito protection and control to guard against any potential threat.
