The deer tick, which received its nickname for commonly being found on white-tailed deer, can be identified by its reddish body and dark head and legs. This type of tick is known to transmit pathogens that cause Lyme disease (borreliosis) and ehrlichiosis. Deer ticks are primarily found in eastern and midwestern states and are common in wooded areas and gardens. Blacklegged tick nymphs, about the size of a poppy seed, are the most dangerous to humans, as they can remain nearly undetected and transmit pathogens faster than larger-bodied individuals.
American dog ticks are relatively large, clocking in at around a quarter of an inch in diameter (not gorged) when fully grown. They have dark-brown bodies and distinctive white or grayish markings on their backs. Common in grassy areas across the eastern half of the US and some western states, American dog ticks are known to spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. Unlike deer ticks, dog ticks prefer open fields over wooded areas.
Lone star ticks are typically reddish-brown. Females have a single white spot on their backs, and males have scattered white markings. They can be found in the southeastern and eastern US, and they are known to transmit ehrlichiosis and (rarely) alpha-gal syndrome, or AGS. Lone star ticks are more aggressive than other types; instead of waiting for a host to pass by, lone star ticks actively seek a host. They are known to hunt in groups by crawling toward animals and humans.

Steak-lovers beware! Sometimes, a bite from a lone star tick can trigger a red meat allergy. Their saliva contains an alpha-gal molecule that may result in a negative immune response to ingested meat.
