F.A.Q.

What's the difference between store-bought and professional mosquito treatments?

Professional products are formulated and applied differently, which is why they last longer than commercially available products.

Both options knock down mosquitoes, and this is hard to deny. But the similarities between DIY sprays and professional products mostly end there. The gap between what a store-bought spray does and what a professional treatment does is wider than most people expect.

Store-bought mosquito sprays typically use a consumer-grade concentration of an active ingredient like permethrin or bifenthrin. They're packaged in ready-to-use bottles or hose-end sprayers designed for homeowner application. They work on contact, meaning that if you spray a mosquito, it is eliminated. The problem is that the concentration is lower, and the residual effects last a shorter period of time. And there is only so far that a can of spray or a small hand-pump sprayer can reach.

Professional treatments use commercial-grade formulations that are designed for extended residual control. The product binds to leaf surfaces and continues to control mosquitoes that land on treated vegetation for approximately 21 days. This treatment is applied with a backpack mist blower, which turns the product into a fine mist that can penetrate deep into shrubs, under deck surfaces, into canopies, and along ground-level vegetation. A homeowner, acting on their own, just can’t reach the areas that professionals (and mosquitoes looking for a place to hide) can.

Trained technicians have one more advantage over homeowners acting alone, and it’s a big one. They know where to look for mosquitoes. That means they know where to treat on a property and they act accordingly, going after the places mosquitoes rest and breed.
