It's possible, though uncommon. A single mosquito can carry more than one disease-causing pathogen at the same time, and if it does, one bite could transmit both.
The idea of catching multiple mosquito-borne illnesses at once sounds scary. And it is possible. For it to happen, a mosquito has to be infected with multiple pathogens at once. Even saying that, it’s rare.
Mosquitoes pick up pathogens by biting infected hosts. Once infected, a mosquito may then pass what it has to the next person or animal bitten. If a mosquito happens to feed on hosts carrying different pathogens, or on a single host that already has a co-infection, it can end up carrying more than one at the same time.
The reason it remains rare is that a lot of factors have to line up to make co-infection happen. For one, the mosquito has to become infected with multiple pathogens, which depends on those pathogens circulating in the local host population at the same time. Most mosquitoes don’t carry anything at all, and of the ones that do, the vast majority carry a single pathogen.
That doesn’t mean co-infection is a myth, though. In areas where more than one mosquito-borne virus is active at the same time, the odds of a mosquito carrying multiple go up, and co-infections have been documented. Similar situations can happen with ticks too.
In most places, the chance of any given bite being infected at all is low, and the chance of a multi-pathogen bite lower still. But it's a solid reason not to shrug off bite prevention, especially in regions like Michigan where viruses such as West Nile and EEE circulate. With fewer bites come lower odds of falling ill.
