Common Types of Ticks in the US

Blacklegged "Deer" Tick

The deer tick, which received its nickname for commonly being found on white-tailed deer, can be identified by its reddish body and dark head and legs. This type of tick is known to transmit pathogens that cause Lyme disease (borreliosis) and ehrlichiosis. Deer ticks are primarily found in eastern and midwestern states and are common in wooded areas and gardens. Blacklegged tick nymphs, about the size of a poppy seed, are the most dangerous to humans, as they can remain nearly undetected and transmit pathogens faster than larger-bodied individuals.

American Dog Tick

American dog ticks are relatively large, clocking in at around a quarter of an inch in diameter (not gorged) when fully grown. They have dark-brown bodies and distinctive white or grayish markings on their backs. Common in grassy areas across the eastern half of the US and some western states, American dog ticks are known to spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. Unlike deer ticks, dog ticks prefer open fields over wooded areas.

Lone Star Tick

Lone star ticks are typically reddish-brown. Females have a single white spot on their backs, and males have scattered white markings. They can be found in the southeastern and eastern US, and they are known to transmit ehrlichiosis and (rarely) alpha-gal syndrome, or AGS. Lone star ticks are more aggressive than other types; instead of waiting for a host to pass by, lone star ticks actively seek a host. They are known to hunt in groups by crawling toward animals and humans.

Where do ticks live in your yard?

Ticks choose to live in shady, humid areas if available. They’re attracted to weeds, tall grasses, low-lying shrubs, and the outer edge of grasslands near lawns.

Ticks are also found in:

Why are ticks dangerous?

Ticks are dangerous because they are the primary carrier of human-contracted diseases like Lyme. In the past decade, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported approximately 30,000 new cases of Lyme disease each year.

Dogs and cats are equally if not more susceptible to illnesses like tick-borne Lyme disease, due to their active lifestyles and low-to-the-ground physiques.

What diseases do ticks carry?

Some of the most common tick-borne diseases include:

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever – This is a potentially fatal bacterial disease resulting in symptoms such as fever, headache, rash, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, muscle pain, and lack of appetite. It is spread by the American dog tick, Rocky Mountain wood tick, and brown dog tick. It is most commonly found in North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
Ehrlichiosis – Although it does affect humans, ehrlichiosis is most commonly contracted by deer and dogs. The bacteria kills white blood cells, so common ehrlichiosis symptoms include headaches, fatigue, and body aches. Lone star and blacklegged ticks are the primary carriers of this disease.
Tularemia – Tularemia is a disease that can affect both people and animals. It can be spread by a tick bite, deer fly bite, contact with infected animals, consuming contaminated water, and more. Symptoms of tularemia vary depending on the form of infection; when someone is infected from a tick bite, symptoms can include skin irritation, inflammation, skin ulcers, and the swelling of lymph glands.
Lyme Disease (Borreliosis) – Named after the Connecticut town in which it was first found, Lyme disease is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in the US, with diagnoses in every state except Hawaii. If caught early, Lyme disease can be resolved by a variety of antibiotics. Unfortunately, Lyme is not the easiest disease to diagnose. The telltale bull’s-eye rash is only one of the many symptoms of Lyme and does not always appear; other symptoms include fever, fatigue, and joint pain.
