The German cockroach is one of the most common household pests. It can be recognized by its small size (about 1/2 inch long) and light brown or tan color with two dark parallel stripes running down its back. It prefers warm, humid environments and is often found in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas with easy access to food and moisture.
The largest common cockroach species, the American cockroach, can grow up to 2 inches long! It has a reddish-brown body with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on its head. This roach prefers damp, dark areas such as basements, sewers, and commercial buildings but can occasionally enter homes in search of food. While less likely to infest homes compared to the German cockroach, the American cockroach is commonly found throughout the US, especially in the South.
Similar in size to the German cockroach (about 1/2 inch long), the brown-banded cockroach can be identified by two light bands across its wings. Unlike the common moisture-loving cockroaches, this species prefers drier areas and may occupy bedrooms, closets, and furniture. Brown-banded cockroaches are found inside homes and businesses where temperatures remain consistently warm.
