What Is Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus & How Do I Know If I Have It?

Please remember: We’re experts at killing mosquitoes, not the diseases they carry. If you have a medical concern, please consult your doctor immediately.

Mosquitoes have been known to transmit diseases that have potentially lasting effects on the body. The Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), transmitted from a mosquito’s bite, is no exception. Although this virus is not as commonly known as other mosquito-borne viruses, like Zika and Malaria, the symptoms caused by this disease can be fatal.

According to the CDC, EEEV is a rare case of brain infection (encephalitis) that can either be systemic or encephalitic. The chart below demonstrates the difference between the two illnesses.

Systemic Illness:

  • Lasts for 1-2 weeks
  • Chills
  • Fevers
  • Malaise
  • Arthralgia (inflammation within the joint)
  • Myalgia (muscle aches and pain in the soft tissue of the bones, muscles and organs)

Encephalitic Illness:

  • Abrupt onset of symptoms in infants
  • Gradual symptoms in older children and adults
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Drowsiness
  • Anorexia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Cyanosis (bluish discoloration in hands and feet)
  • Coma
  • Convulsions

Treatment for Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus

Unfortunately, there is no human vaccine against EEEV infection available at this time. Individuals that are suspected to have EEEV should be assessed by their healthcare provider to discuss further steps during this infection.

EEEV Prevention

The most effective way to prevent this infection is easier said than done: don’t get bitten! The use of insect repellent and clothing that covers your body can aid in preventing mosquito bites, but sometimes this may not be enough.
