There’s nothing quite as uncomfortable as hearing a mouse shuffling across the floor in your garage. Of course, garages are a great place to call home if you happen to be a mouse. They are quieter than most parts of the house. People rarely go in there at night and they’re well stocked with food like birdseed, grass seed, pet food, and trash. It’s also fairly easy to get in because most garage doors, let’s be honest, don’t seal very well. Mice only need a dime-sized hole to get in, and most garages have more than a few of those.
To deter rodents, you need to do three things: get rid of the ones that are there, give them no reason to go there, and then block the entry points.
If droppings, shredded paper, gnawed bags, or nighttime scratching say mice are already in residence, sealing now just locks them into the building. Traps and bait stations placed along walls and behind the clutter where activity concentrates clear the current population fast.
Then make sure everything rodents can eat goes in chew-proof metal or heavy plastic containers. That goes double for birdseed and pet food. Trash needs to have a tight lid on it. Then, it’s a good idea to clean up the garage in general by storing items in sealed bins and keeping tarps and fabric off the floor.
Once you’ve done that, then you can focus on sealing home gaps. You can add a new bottom gasket to the garage door to better fit the floor. It also helps to add weatherstripping and a sweep on the door into the house. Look for areas where pipes, wires, and cables pass through walls and block those too. Make sure to use chew-proof materials.
