If you have a rodent infestation in your house, you may see small droppings, damaged food packaging, or shredded nesting material. You may also hear them scurrying around in the walls at night.
You do not have to see a mouse to have a mouse problem. In fact, that’s common for most people who have rodents in their home. Rodents try very hard not to be seen.
Droppings are one of the clearest possible clues. You may see them along walls, inside lower cabinets, beneath sinks, behind appliances, in pantries, and around stored materials in garages or basements. Fresh droppings appearing in the same area tell you mice are still traveling nearby. Gnaw marks on baseboards or cardboard boxes or food packaging are also another strong giveaway. Rodent teeth are always growing so they have to wear them down through chewing.
Then there is the noise. Mice are quiet during the day. But at night, they’re a lot more likely to root around inside your walls or attic. You might hear them in your cabinets if they’re extra bold. The scratching or scurrying sound is a common complaint among homeowners with rodent roommates.
Rodents build nests. To do this, they shred paper, fabric, and insulation. If you find little tufts or shreds of any of these materials in undisturbed spaces, it should make you more than a little suspicious.
When rodents are around for a long time, they can leave behind a stale or musty odor as well. This is especially bad in enclosed spaces.
If you find evidence indoors, try finding out how they got in. Mice are tiny. They can fit through openings about the size of a dime, and you can find plenty of those in the gaps around pipes, vents, doors, foundations, siding, and other exterior openings. Catching the mouse without addressing how it got inside may only solve the problem temporarily.
