If you’re like us, now is the time of year when it feels most appropriate to think of warmer climes. As great as the springs, summers, and falls in the Northeast are, winters tend to be brutal. Despite our best attempts to make our homes feel cozy and warm, there is usually a time during the winter when it all feels insufficient and a vacation elsewhere is necessary. Preferably, someplace warm. It is for this reason that so many residents in the Northeast find themselves in Florida during winter’s peak. For a lot of reasons, such an outing can help mood and provide a nice break from the flat gray of the northern winters. Coincidentally, now is the time of year when people start to ask if ticks are still active in the south this time of year. In Florida, the answer is yes, but a tick encounter in the south is less dangerous than one in our region. As weird as this sounds, ticks don’t carry diseases at nearly the level that they do in our part of the United States! However, ticks do remain active during the winter in Florida, so it never hurts to stay wary and prepared.

Ticks on the beach: Where might you find them?

If ticks are active, you should know where to look. Just like in our region, ticks like to hang out in areas that allow them access to passing animals. So, short beach grasses and shrubs are a classic place where you might encounter a tick. If you sit close enough to a tick, they can briefly crawl over to you, where they can latch onto your skin or become stuck in your beach towel. For this reason, make sure to thoroughly shake out your belongings as you pack up to leave the beach!
