Flies indoors often gather around windows because they’re attracted to daylight and want to find their way outside.
If you’ve encountered indoor flies repeatedly bouncing against the windows, wondering how they’re unable to penetrate the invisible forcefield, the more important question might have been: How’d they get in here in the first place?
Certain species of flies can enter through open doors, damaged screens, gaps around windows, vents, siding, and other exterior openings. And certain fly species can reproduce indoors.
Does the Type of Fly Matter?
The type of fly absolutely matters. Houseflies are filth flies, often found feeding and breeding on animal waste, garbage, and decaying organic material. On the other hand, drain flies can reproduce in the moist organic material that accumulates inside drains. And then cluster flies are an altogether different story. They can enter homes to find protected shelter, later emerging from their hiding spaces to bug you.
All this to say, persistently finding flies around a window doesn’t necessarily indicate the source of the fly problem. The window could simply be where they’ve ended up.
And also to say, you can help reduce the likelihood of flies getting into your house by keeping garbage contained, cleaning up organic debris outside, repairing damaged screens, and sealing exterior gaps around your home.
