Cold winters in Massachusetts can be tough on outdoor flea populations, but freezing weather doesn’t automatically mean every flea outside your home is gone.
Fleas have a complex life cycle. It all starts with flea eggs – possibly a whole lot of ‘em. Then, they progress through larval, pupal, and adult stages. While fleas that are directly exposed to freezing outdoor conditions might perish, those within protected environments can hardily ride it out.
Adult fleas spend most of their lives feeding on animal hosts. What’s more flea pupae can remain inside their protective cocoons for weeks or months, waiting to emerge when conditions are favorable to their survival.
Sure, freezing temperatures can reduce some of the flea population, but Jack Frost is not a reliable flea control technician.
Where Can Fleas Survive Harsh Winter Conditions?
Fleas can survive indoors if they make it inside. A climate-controlled home offers far better conditions for survival than a frozen Newton backyard. They can survive on hosts, as well. Both domesticated and wild animals, including dogs, cats, opossums, raccoons, skunks, and other mammals, make cozy winter flea hosts.
This is an important example of why flea control must account for more than the adult fleas you’ve happened to see.
Outdoor maintenance, like maintaining vegetation, removing yard debris, and discouraging wildlife from sheltering on your property, can all help reduce favorable flea habitats.
