F.A.Q.

Do Asian lady beetles prefer light-colored siding?

They can be. Asian lady beetles are often drawn to bright, contrasting, and sun-warmed exterior surfaces, but siding color is not the only factor.

If one side of your house already seems to be covered in orange, red, or yellowish beetles on a sunny fall afternoon, then you likely have insects ready to overwinter. You still have time to do something about this.

Asian lady beetles spend most of the warmer season outdoors where they prey on aphids and other insects. Once temperatures fall, large numbers may gather on buildings before looking for cracks and crevices where they can hide out through the winter. They tend to do this on light-colored surfaces that see a lot of sunlight. Pale south- or west-facing walls tend to see more beetle activity than shaded walls or different colored walls.

Still, bugs on the outside walls are not a problem on their own. If they can get in, that’s a different story. Small gaps allow them into spaces like wall voids and attics. These gaps can often be found around window and door frames, siding, soffits, vents, rooflines, and utility line penetrations. Once inside, these beetles mostly stay inactive until either warm winter days or indoor heat push them to emerge in living areas.

They do not typically establish themselves by feeding on the structure, but large indoor numbers can certainly be annoying, though. Asian lady beetles can also release a yellowish fluid with an odor when disturbed or crushed. While not common, some people may find that it aggravates their allergies as well.
