F.A.Q.

Do ocean winds affect where mice like to hide?

Ocean winds are not the primary reason why rodents hide, but the winds do make dry, protected spaces around buildings more attractive as shelter.

Wind alone isn’t the primary reason why mice hide. But they don’t like being in places that are cold or wet, and ocean breezes don’t help in that regard. Mice are less interested in the wind itself and more interested in getting into somewhere warm and dry. That might mean your house.

On an exposed Jersey Shore property, wind and rain can make sheltered spaces around buildings extra useful to rodents. If your home also provides a source of food and nesting material, then as far as rodents are concerned, that’s even better.

Garages, sheds, crawl spaces, wall voids, enclosed porches, and protected areas beneath or alongside structures can all provide conditions that are more stable than an exposed outdoor hiding place. Dense vegetation, stored materials, and exterior clutter can offer protection as well.

Mice don't need much space to get inside, often squeezing through remarkably small gaps. When an exterior hiding spot is combined with easy access to stored pet food or bird seed, they have every reason to stick around and eventually find their way indoors.

For homeowners on the coast, it often makes sense to inspect areas where weather exposure can wear down seals and building materials. Start by looking at garage and exterior door corners. Also check screens, vents, openings around utilities (pipes, cables, etc.), and other structural seams. This is especially important after storms or rough weather.

Finding physical evidence of mice means you need to locate their shelter and track down their entry point. Catching a single mouse won't stop the next one from walking through the exact same hole.

If mice are finding protected places around your Jersey Shore property, Mosquito Squad of the Jersey Shore can help identify rodent activity and develop an appropriate control plan. Call (732) 716-3346 or request a free quote online.
