F.A.Q.

Why do DIY pest treatments seem to stop working over time?

DIY treatments were never providing full control in the first place. The most effective mosquito control works on a population level, but most DIY treatments go after individual mosquitoes.

You started spraying in May and it seemed to help. By July, you're spraying the same product on the same schedule and the mosquitoes are worse than ever. It's easy to assume the product stopped working. What's more likely is that the population itself is outpacing what DIY treatment can do.

Consumer-grade sprays have short residuals. They either knock down or repel mosquitoes on contact, but they don’t leave much of a barrier behind. Every time the product dissipates, which can happen within days and often hours, the treatment window closes. Mosquitoes go about their business normally afterward.

Female mosquitoes can lay 100–200 eggs at a time, and it only takes those eggs 7–14 days to hatch. By the time midsummer rolls around, the population of mosquitoes could be truly enormous, and a spray bottle alone can’t keep up with it.

DIY mosquito control is also not very effective at reaching the places where mosquitoes rest during the day. Most homeowners treat the areas where they notice bites, like the patio, deck, and seating area. But mosquitoes spend most of the day resting in humid, cool places. So it helps to treat vegetation and around areas where standing water sources are. Untreated zones are reservoirs that continuously resupply the population if left unchecked.

There’s also a bit of perception at play here. Mosquito sprays tend to come out around May when mosquitoes start to bite, but their numbers are still low. But as the season runs on and mosquito populations take off, it becomes increasingly clear that the DIY sprays are insufficient. They appear to be wearing off, but were truthfully not doing a lot about the core problem in the first place.
