F.A.Q.

How often do professionals recommend mosquito treatments?

Barrier treatments should generally happen every 2–3 weeks through the mosquito season. That is about how long the products used to treat last, and timely retreatment prevents mosquitoes from repopulating between treatments.

You may wonder why mosquito treatment needs to happen on a recurring basis. Why is it not possible to treat once, and only once, and be good to go for the whole season?

Long story short: mosquito treatment products break down over time with the sun and the rain. This happens in about 2–3 weeks. If your yard goes untreated for too long, surviving mosquitoes breed, and you have a whole new problem.

Professional barrier treatments work because their active ingredients stay on vegetation where mosquitoes rest. While the active ingredients are still working, the mosquitoes that land on treated surfaces are knocked down on contact.

Left untreated, mosquitoes can lay 100–200 eggs in one go. And most of them will go on to become biting adults in about 7–10 days. So a four-week gap between treatments means that right when the treatment wears off, the next generation has a chance to hatch.

Mosquitoes are a problem in Grand Rapids from roughly late April to roughly October. Over the course of a full season, you might have your yard treated 8–10 times in total. Starting early helps a lot here because it means that the first treatment in May can target the first wave of adults before they’ve had a chance to multiply. Then every treatment from there builds on the suppression provided from the one before.
