You can help prevent rodents from getting inside by sealing the openings they use. It also helps to remove easy food and shelter and check the property regularly for signs of their activity.
Rodent prevention starts with the home itself. Mice do not need obvious holes in the wall. Small gaps under doors or around pipes are all they need to get in. Even cracks in the foundation are fair game.
Check around doors, windows, vents, siding edges, foundation cracks, and places where utility lines or pipes enter the home. If you see daylight, look closer, as that might tell you how they're getting inside. Mice are smaller than you think. They can fit through holes about the size of a dime and can gnaw materials to make holes larger if it's a close call. That can even include softer building materials when they’re really determined.
Rodents also need access to food, ideally the kind that doesn't put them at risk of being seen. Birdseed, pet food, grass seed, pantry goods, and garbage can all make a garage, basement, or kitchen worth investigating. Store dry goods in sturdy closed containers where practical, keep trash covered, and clean up spills and crumbs.
In addition to food, rodents need shelter. Your home provides that partly just by keeping them out of the cold. But rodents also want places where they won’t be disturbed. That's much easier to do in a cluttered space with boxes against the wall or firewood right up against the house. Clearing clutter helps prevent rodents from getting too comfortable.
If rodents are already inside, you need to do prevention and removal together. Catching existing mice without fixing entry points means more can come inside. Sealing every opening without removing rodents simply traps them inside. This is why rodent control often involves inspection, removal, exclusion, and follow-up as part of one coordinated service.
