Mosquitoes are worst around July and August in New Jersey. As for time of day, mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.
If you’ve ever gone outside on a July evening and been swarmed by mosquitoes, there is a reason for that. And that’s because it is both the worst time of year and time of day for mosquito problems.
On any given day, mosquitoes are busiest at dawn and dusk. They don’t do well in the hot and dry parts of the midday, instead hiding in humid and shaded foliage. When the heat starts to level off and humidity rises, mosquitoes become active again. This is when they tend to bite the most. The exception is the Aedes mosquitoes, which tend to bite around the ankles and are active any time of day.
Across the season, activity builds as summer goes on. The population grows generation by generation through the warm months, and in New Jersey it typically peaks from July into August, when heat and humidity are at their worst. You can often see this a week or two after heavy summer rain because the water left behind gives mosquitoes places to breed.
The season winds down as fall arrives. Cooler nights slow the mosquitoes' metabolism and breeding, activity tapers through September and October, and the first hard frost effectively ends it.
