F.A.Q.

Will DIY mosquito sprays be enough to protect my yard?

DIY mosquito sprays can knock down mosquitoes you see in the moment. But they can’t provide the sustained, yard-wide protection needed to keep the population under control through the season.

It's a fair question. The sprays at the hardware store cost a fraction of professional treatment, and the labels promise to kill mosquitoes on contact. So why not handle it yourself?

The short answer is that while DIY sprays can help with the immediate problem, they don’t necessarily fix the deeper one. A can of yard spray will kill or repel mosquitoes in a small area for a short time. But if you see a few mosquitoes, there are probably dozens, hundreds, or even thousands nearby. They’re likely resting in shrubs, under the deck, or anywhere else that is shaded and humid during the day. The spray doesn’t treat those mosquitoes.

Professional barrier treatments work on a population level. They are applied where mosquitoes rest, such as in dense vegetation, and work for about 21 days at a time. The residue remains long after the initial treatment, and mosquitoes are knocked down on contact. The fallen mosquitoes can’t produce eggs which will hatch into new mosquitoes and bother you two weeks later.

Professional applicators also have equipment that pushes product deep into vegetation. Consumer sprays in bottles or with small hose-ends simply can’t reach far enough to truly stop mosquitoes from finding places to rest. A backpack mist blower can.
