Your Backyard Could Be Invaded By Disease Carrying Mosquitoes

December 20, 2023

Attending that outdoor neighborhood BBQ may be hazardous to your health! That sounds extreme but an article in the Daily Independent reports that the Centers for Disease Control is suggesting that mosquitoes that carry serious and even deadly diseases are becoming more prevalent in the Triad area of North Carolina and other areas as well.

The Aedes Aegypti mosquito and the Aedes Albopictus (Asian Tiger) mosquito are prevalent in areas of the 48 contiguous United States that support 75% of the US population. These 2 species are capable of carrying viruses like Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya. All of these can cause severe illness and in some cases death. Zika can also cause birth defects.

In a paper published by the Journal of Medical Entomolgy it revealed maps created by the CDC that show the areas of the US that have the high possibility of being affected by these 2 mosquito species.

There are steps that can be taken to control the presence of mosquitoes or make them less likely to come to you for a bite.

  • Turn over the buckets, wagons, and remove toys that hold standing water—particularly around your pool, garden, and outdoor living places.
  • Cover all garbage cans with lids that fit snug and will not let water into them.
  • If you have a man made pond, stock your pond with some fish that will eat the mosquito larvae.
  • Trim bushes, shrubs, and vines that touch or overhang your property.
  • Rake and remove piles of leaves or brush that can collect even small bottle cap size pools of water.
  • Make sure any tarps on the property are taut, so they cannot collect standing water.
  • Wear long sleeve shirts and long pants.
  • Make sure your clothing is light colored or white. Mosquitoes are attracted to bright and darker colors.
  • Avoid outdoors at dawn and dusk. Many species of mosquitoes are the most active at these times.
  • If necessary, use insecticides and even mist your clothing.
