It’s that time of year again. After a long winter where we experienced freedom from the winged menaces, mosquitoes are once again on the rise in our region. Nowadays, huge mosquito population explosions are the norm, but there are expectations that our mosquito problems are only going to get worse. We know, it already seems like mosquitoes in CT couldn’t get any worse, but this is our new reality. Warming climate conditions are leading to longer springs and falls, a period when mosquitoes can reproduce and expand their ranks. The issue has become a topic of such concern that even our state government has taken a keen interest in curbing mosquitoes. At their least-problematic level, mosquitoes are a gigantic nuisance, which is reason enough to try and keep their numbers down, but these insects hold a much more insidious secret.

Why is South Windsor mosquito control important?

Mosquitoes in our region are increasingly found to carry dangerous diseases that can infect humans. Normally, we don’t think of mosquito-borne diseases as a huge issue, but there is growing reason to pay attention. Our government recognizes the potential severity of a mosquito-borne disease epidemic, which is why they have already begun to test mosquitoes in CT. This way, our leadership can gain a better understanding of what areas in the state are at a greater risk than others. Unfortunately, based on last season’s numbers, the entire state has reason to be on edge. West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in our region, and it was discovered in 208 mosquito pools across all eight of Connecticut’s counties. Normally, this disease reaches peak prevalence from July through September, so we are rapidly approaching this time frame. Despite their minuscule size, there are very few solutions that work against these insects. Bug zappers and other devices do very little in the long run against mosquitoes as they don’t address the underlying factors that contribute to mosquito breeding. To properly defend yourself against mosquitoes this summer, make sure to consult the professionals.
