Outdoor living will be in full swing soon and the masses will promptly return to their backyards and local parks. Connecticut is, in our opinion, one of the best places you can be to enjoy the best that summer has to offer. From basking in the sun to hiking around our rolling mountains, there is a lot to do and explore every time warm weather rolls around. However, we aren’t the only animals that emerge from their eggs when spring and summer are back. Insects of all kinds are back in force each summer, and hordes of mosquitoes are included among this number. Ironically, the season when outdoor living is best is when the nemesis of outdoor living reappears! Whining and ravenous, mosquitoes rely on blood to lay their eggs around your yard. We aren’t the only part of the U.S. that suffers at the hands of these insects, either.

Suffield mosquito control could be entirely different in the future

Particularly in the South, hot conditions and lots of marshland breed millions upon millions of mosquitoes each season, which is why some innovative mosquito control techniques are being developed there. Although the treatment isn’t approved for usage across the country yet, the EPA has approved the release of 2.4 billion genetically mosquitoes in Florida and California. These mosquitoes are all male, so they won’t bite, and they are programmed to sabotage the reproduction of their species, Aedes aegypti. Fitted with a particular gene that makes viable offspring impossible, the hope is that these mosquitoes will deal a heavy blow to mosquito reproduction efforts in both of these states. We have little idea of what kind of negative effects releasing GMO mosquitoes into the environment could have, but the method is nonetheless intriguing. Mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise in our region, which could motivate similarly innovative mosquito control strategies. However, this technology isn’t yet applicable to our region. Lots of testing needs to happen before we can be confident in the effectiveness and sustainability of such mosquito control methods. Fortunately, there are already great mosquito control options available to you.
