Has a mosquito bitten you in Greenville yet? If you’ve spent time outdoors without using any strategies to avoid mosquitoes, especially near water, there’s a good chance you have. It’s been a big season for mosquitoes in Greenville already, and we’re just three weeks into summer.

There may be a higher bite rate this summer than the Greenville area has experienced in previous seasons. At Mosquito Squad of Greenville, we’ve had a surge of people looking for mosquito control solutions.

What Can You Do to Avoid Mosquito Bites & Mosquito-Borne Diseases?

Did you know that there are 61 mosquito species in South Carolina? Though not all of these species bite, those that do can spread diseases to humans. We’re talking about serious diseases, such as West Nile Virus, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), La Crosse encephalitis, and more.

The American Mosquito Control Association advises the following to help avoid mosquitoes:

  1. Dump water out of containers on your property every week.
  2. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes, long sleeves, and long pants.
  3. Apply a mosquito repellent that is registered by the EPA. Products can contain citronella or citronella oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, catnip oil, picaridin, or 2-undecanone.

We also recommend cleaning your gutters out. Gutters can be a significant breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Pet owners are also encouraged to take steps to help protect their pets from mosquito-borne diseases. According to South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), last year 13 of the 17 cases of EEE in horses took place during the summer months. If you’re a pet owner, you may consider talking to your veterinarian about a vaccine.

Greenville Mosquito Control Gets to the Source of the Problem

To help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases infecting your family, we recommend getting to the source of the problem: eliminating the mosquitoes themselves. With the Squad’s Backyard Mosquito Control Barrier Protection, we can eliminate 85%-90% of mosquitoes on contact, and the treatment continues to work for three weeks.
