If you live in the local Fenton-Brighton area, then you are probably gearing up for the summer. As you spend more time outside, you have to be aware of ticks that live in the area as well. Ticks can carry a wide variety of diseases, including Lyme Disease, which can lead to major complications. If you are wondering, "how common is getting Lyme disease from ticks," the answer is that it is not that common, as not all ticks carry Lyme disease, and ticks have to stay attached to you for several hours before transmitting the infection.

At the same time, what can you do to prevent yourself from getting Lyme Disease? There are a few important points to keep in mind.

Take Precautions When You Go Outside

In order to prevent the development of Lyme Disease, you must take precautions when you go outside. For example, you should always wear long clothes, this means wearing shoes inside of flip flops along with long socks. Even though it is hot outside, you should also wear long pants and a shirt with long sleeves.

These precautions are important because they will make it harder for ticks to bite you. They will not be able to cut through your clothing. If you take these precautions, you can reduce your chances of getting bitten by a tick and contracting Lyme Disease.

Take Precautions When You Come Back Inside

Next, you also need to take precautions when you come back inside as well. The first thing you need to do is remove your clothing and place them in the wash. Then, check every square inch of your body for any signs of ticks. Remember that you will need a comb to go through any part of your body that has hair. Ticks can hide in your body hair and blend in easily, especially if you have dark body hair. You also need to check your kids and pets for any signs of ticks. Be patient and do not overlook any single location.

If you do spot a tick, you must remove it to prevent the development of Lyme Disease. You should use a pair of tweezers to grab the head of the tick. If you simply yank on the back, you will separate the head from the body. The head can still transmit Lyme Disease. Do not panic, as the tick usually has to be connected to you and feeding for several hours before you can get Lyme Disease. It does not transmit this disease to you instantly.

What Does Lyme Disease Look Like?

If you have developed Lyme Disease, you will notice a fever, shakes, aches, and chills. The hallmark symptom is a bulls-eye rash. Importantly, not everyone who has Lyme Disease will develop this rash. That is why you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms above after spending time outside this summer.
