As you’ve more than likely heard, there’s a relatively new tick disease that’s making its rounds. While this particular disease has been absent from Massachusetts, it’s making its way here. There’s, of course, Lyme disease, which can cause neurological problems and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which can be lethal, but now ticks are causing humans to become allergic to red meat. You’re more than likely wondering how this is possible, as were we when we heard about it a few years ago. However, just a few years ago it wasn’t very common to find the Lone Start tick in our state. That has now since changed.
It appears the Lone Star tick, yes the one named after Texas, is capable of transmitting a simple sugar into humans (a sugar not usually present in the human body) called alpha-gal that results in unintended horrifying effects. The body reacts to this unnatural invader and goes into overdrive to destroy it. Once this has occurred, just once, the body will react similarly to the ingestion of red meat. The immune system response can be quite severe and, unfortunately, will remain an issue for the victim of the bite for the remainder of their lives. It’s important to note that, so far, the Lone Star tick is the primary cause of this terrifying reaction to a tick bite.
