What Does St. Charles County Municipal Mosquito Control Mean For You?

December 20, 2023

Summer is less than a week away, and the mosquitoes are ready to enjoy the summer with us if we let them! Mild winters and wet weather help these little buggers flourish, so it’s up to all of us to squash the party. According to Kayla Wheeler of KSDK News, St. Charles County Mosquito Control Program and the Division of Environmental Health are looking to work with members of the community to reduce the number of mosquitoes.

What St. Charles County Mosquito Control Is Doing

A photo of a dock by the lakeThe County points out that mosquitoes do not spread Covid-19, but they do spread other diseases, most commonly West Nile Virus in our area. To keep the population down, they will be misting areas with dense mosquito populations as they occur. They will be treating areas of possible breeding with larvicide to stop adult development. They will be trapping and testing mosquitoes for the sake of species research, as knowing what kinds of mosquitoes are present helps to know what diseases might be present.

What They Want You To Do

Caroline McEwen, manager of the Mosquito Control Program, says, “When residents take steps to protect themselves from insect bites and eliminate breeding grounds from their homes, our program is more focused and effective.”

The steps to take are easy but highly effective.

Around your home, you should remove all yard debris, old tires, and empty flower pots as each of these can hold standing water. Be sure to drain areas such as baby pools and birdbaths that can collect water as well. Mosquitoes love standing water and multiply there. Check your doors for gaps and screens for holes to keep mosquitoes from making their way inside your home. Be sure to protect yourself and your family by avoiding bites. Wear long sleeves and long pants in highly mosquito populated areas and always, ALWAYS wear insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

The County’s efforts to keep the mosquito population down is excellent for the community as a whole, but it’s not likely to make it into your own backyard. Keeping things tidy and dry as suggested above, is a super start to mosquito control, but that’s just the first step.
