In a recent New York Times article, it was announced just a couple of days ago that Jason Day, one of the world’s top golfers, would be pulling out of the Olympics over Zika concerns. He stated that the risk of possible Zika virus transmission posed risks to his wife’s future pregnancies and to future members of the family. Day has two children currently and him and his wife Ellie plan to have more. He doesn’t want to put his family at risk in any way by going to Rio de Janeiro in fear of contracting Zika.
Day won last year’s P.G.A. Championship for his first major title. Other golf players have also been pulling out, which has been critical since golf is in the Olympics for the first time since 1904.
Since there is a lot that is still unknown about Zika, concern is becoming widespread. Only some of the mosquitoes in the United States have been studied for their likelihood of transmitting the virus, which is alarming. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak of Zika in the Western Hemisphere a “public health emergency.” Experts at the National Institutes of Health have deemed the virus outbreak a “pandemic.” However, the Brazilian government has not made any indication it is considering postponing the games. Instead, officials have announced a number of precautionary measures to keep venues safe.
