It seems like there’s always something to worry about it, and the fear of Zika has been on the minds of many. Just yesterday, Wednesday, 5/18/16, the Wisconsin State Journal confirmed that a Wisconsin woman who traveled to Honduras had the first confirmed case of Zika in the state, as reported by health officials. The woman’s residence or condition of her illness was not released.

The mosquitoes that can carry the virus generally aren’t thought to travel as far north as Wisconsin, as there have been no case of Zika acquired in the continental U.S., and none are expected in Wisconsin this year. However, Wisconsin is one of the remaining states to have a confirmed Zika case infection detected in a resident. So far, over 300 Wisconsin residents who have traveled to countries with known Zika virus transmission have been tested.

As you probably know, Zika causes the most risk to pregnant women and their unborn babies. The state Department of Health Services has targeted outreach to health care providers caring for pregnant women. An infected mother can pass the Zika virus to a baby during pregnancy. The virus can cause a medical condition where the baby’s head size is smaller than normal because the brain has improper development.
