Malaria No More Fights the Cycle of Poverty

Malaria No More's Mosquito Control Efforts

Malaria, to most people who reside in North America, is this foreign, rare, exotic disease that has no impact on our daily lives. Imagine, if you can, living in an environment where this is a constant worry. Worry of missing work because you contracted the disease or a family member has to be nursed because they have it. Worry of spending the limited resources you have on the cost of treatment. Worry that your child may die from contracting this awful mosquito-borne disease. Well this is a reality for a significant number of the world's population. Malaria has a huge impact on whole communities and families that are the most vulnerable in the world.

Malaria No More

Malaria No More is a humanitarian organization that envisions a world where no one dies from a mosquito bite. It's goal is to end malaria within our generation by mobilizing political commitment, funding, and innovation to achieve what would be one of the greatest humanitarian accomplishments ever.

Here are some facts about malaria you may not know:

  • Malaria is the #1 killer in the world
  • This makes the tiny mosquito the most dangerous animal in the world
  • In 2017 there were 219 million cases of malaria resulting in approximately 435,000 deaths
  • Nearly half of the world's population is at risk with the greatest number of those afflicted being in sub-Saharan Africa
  • 87 countries are affected with ongoing malaria transmission
  • Unfortunately malaria has the highest impact on those areas that have the least amount of resources to combat the disease with effective mosquito control measures.

Here is the impact of Malaria No More's efforts:

  1. Since 2002 663 million cases have been prevented
  2. In that same time 6.8 million lives have been saved
  3. Malaria deaths have dropped 62% since 200 as a result of global efforts
  4. 1000% increase in global funding for the fight against malaria
  5. Mosquito control efforts expands to 24 countries covering an additional 90 million people at risk in Africa alone

In looking at the heat map above, you can see that malaria has the greatest impact in some of the most poverty stricken areas of the world. People and countries that have the fewest resources to combat the disease with effective mosquito control efforts. People and countries that are impacted with political strife that make efforts difficult to implement. These are the areas that Malaria No More is taking it's fight. Here are some mind boggling financial numbers:

  1. Malaria free countries have 5X greater economic growth that countries with malaria.
  2. A 10% decrease in malaria has been associated with a .3% rise in GDP.
  3. For every $1 invested in mosquito control for malaria in Africa results in $40 of economic growth. This contributes to a higher prosperity stimulating the economy of these poorest areas.

By leading these effort, Malaria No More is creating innovations that will effect other mosquito-borne illnesses that have regional and global impacts, diseases like Zika and Dengue.

Mosquito Squad is proud to be a supporter of Malaria No More and their global efforts to end malaria and by doing so increase the economic impact of some of the most poverty stricken areas of the world.
