Treat Your SW Michigan Yard for Mosquitoes and Maintain the Health of Your Plants

Keeping mosquitos out of the yard of your SW Michigan home is important when you want to enjoy your outdoor space during the warmer months. In the summer of 2021, mosquito samples collected and tested at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Laboratories (MDHHS BOL) were found to have Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV). With the virus being found in 2021, there is likelihood it will also be found in 2022 and beyond.

The best way to stay protected from this illness, along with other mosquito-borne infections such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile virus (WNV), is to avoid being bitten by mosquitos. If you want to spend time outdoors between March and November, avoiding those bites may feel like a daunting task. Fortunately, with the right mosquito prevention treatment, you can keep mosquitoes from invading your yard, so you can enjoy your space more fully.

Mosquito Populations are On the Rise

In June 2021, the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department set 10 traps across a two-county area, and those traps were checked at the end of that month. Only 13 mosquitos were caught. When the traps were checked again on July 15th, 225 mosquitos were in the traps. The booming mosquito population in SW Michigan was likely caused by the rainy weather. Because mosquito populations are increasing, protection from them and the illnesses they can carry is becoming more important than ever.

Take Precautions to Reduce the Mosquito Population

If you have standing water or other moist areas around your home, those spaces can quickly become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. To reduce the number of mosquitos in the SW Michigan area throughout the March to November season, you can:

  • Dump out any standing water in buckets, barrels, and other containers

  • Make sure any puddles dry up or get disbursed between rains

  • Keep your backyard water features flowing, so mosquitos can't breed there

These are all great ways you can help reduce the mosquito population, but sometimes those measures just aren't enough to keep these pesky insects out of your yard. You don't want to stay inside during the great weather in spring and summer, or avoid those first crisp, fall days. The good news is that you don't have to miss out on those things. A mosquito treatment service can be an excellent way to reclaim your yard or other outdoor space, so you can enjoy it all year round.
