The Joro Spider in the U.S.

What Do They Look Like?

Joro spiders are very similar in appearance to the banana spider. They are around three inches in size, about the size of an adult's palm. They have bodies that look similar to bananas with thick black and yellow markings. The best way to tell them apart from banana spiders is to look for the distinctive red mark on their underbelly. 

Where Did the Joro Spider Come From? 

Joro spiders come from eastern parts of Asia, including Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan. Until 2014, the U.S. had never seen the Joro spider – until the first one was spotted in Georgia. While some reporters have suggested that the Joro spider arrived via a dropped shipping container on the side of the road, no one really knows for sure how the Joro got to the United States. Unfortunately, Georgia is the perfect spot for them, as they thrive in warmer weather. 

Are Joro Spiders Dangerous?

While their long stretching arms and dense bodies are very intimidating and don't help folks with arachnophobia, Joro spiders don't present any significant danger to humans. They can be very annoying, as they repopulate quickly and can spin very dense webs that can be as much as 10 feet deep! Like most spiders, they're only dangerous to those who are allergic to spider bites.
