Protect your Horses from Mosquito Transmitted Diseases

Horses are at high risk for mosquito transmitted diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV).

If you have not already vaccinated your horses you should talk to your veterinarian because cases of WNVhave recently been reported in Wisconsin.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus can be fatal to horses. Both can cause inflammation of the brain and show similar symptoms. If your horse becomes infected with either of the diseases it will show the following signs: depression, drooping of eyelids and lower lip, appetite loss, weakness, fever, twitching, aimless wandering, paralysis or lack of coordination, circling, and blindness.

Because the two diseases are transmitted through mosquitoes there are certain preventative measures that can be taken.

1. Remove items on the property that collect water, or turn them over regularly
2. Consider keeping horses in the barn during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active
3. Spray areas where horses are most often held with Mosquito Squad’s Barrier Treatment packages

At Mosquito Squad of Northwestern Wisconsin we are concerned that recent cases of WNV have tested positive in the area. We will do everything we can to prevent future cases and protect your animals with our mosquito control services.
