The Tick Encounter Resource Center (TERC), one of my all time favorite websites, offers some of the best information about protecting yourself from tick bites and tick-borne diseases. The Tick Encounter Resource Center from the University of Rhode Island is a leads the promotion of public health information about tick-bite protection and tick-borne disease prevention.

TERC works hard to make sure we, the public, are educated in how to prevent tick bites, how to identify ticks, which ticks carry what disease and how to recognize if you may have contracted a tick disease. If you don’t already follow them, they have a fantastic website and also have a presence on every major social media site even including Pinterest.

TERC offers a variety of extremely informative videos, including the #1 video on how to remove a tick safely. With more than 5.2 million views on YouTube you know this video is an extremely successful teaching tool. Check out my top 3 TERC videos below.

#1) SAFE TICK REMOVAL

You’ll notice the use of pointy, needle-nose tweezers being a key first step. Make sure to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight out. It is important not to twist, tear or rip so that you can get the tick’s mouth parts out without breaking them off or stressing the tick into regurgitating into your skin. If you should rip the tick on accident, be sure to use the tweezers to remove its mouth parts from your skin. Always clean the bite thoroughly after removing the tick.

2) PERIMETER SPRAY – THE BEST TICK CONTROL

Deer ticks love to hang out in shaded wooded areas around the perimeter of your yard. One of the best ways to protect yourself from ticks and the diseases they carry is to hire a professional tick control expert who can apply tick killing treatment to the perimeter of your yard where ticks are hiding.

3) COLLECTING TICK LARVAE

One of the reasons why disease carrying ticks are especially dangerous is because they are so plentiful and so tiny. You’ll notice in the video they almost look like a spec of dirt. While you might notice a large quantity on you and brush them off, it is easy to miss one or two. You’ll notice the tick survey team is wearing light colored clothing with their pants tucked into their socks. This is to help them notice if ticks get on them and to keep the ticks out of their pants and socks. Using a lint roller is one of the best ways to remove ticks from your clothing after spending time in the woods camping or hiking.
