March Madness Strategy for Mosquito Control Ensures a Winning Season Ahead

Soon, the snow will be melted and with warmer weather and standing water, those tiny, biting nemeses – mosquitoes – will be back with a vengeance! According to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District’s website, mosquitoes not only leave painful bites, but they also carry diseases such as West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Malaria, and Bone Break Fever. It only takes a capful of water to provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. To effectively break the cycle of mosquitoes in your yard: tip over any containers of standing water. Mosquitoes hatch in a mere three days, so freshening the water in birdbaths and dog bowls is a critical move.

Strategy 2: Toss Out
Not disposing of yard debris is like giving team mosquito a free throw: cool place to hang out during the heat of the day, so they can come out in offense droves in the cool of the morning or evening. Toss out all yard waste quickly for an effective block.

Strategy 3: Turn Over
As stated by the Mass Audubon, “The mosquitoes of greatest concern for WNV (West Nile Virus) transmission breed primarily in small isolated areas, such as buckets, old tires, tree hollows, and stormwater catch basins.” Get the jump on mosquitoes after a rainfall by turning over and emptying excess water out of the things that collected water during the shower.

Strategy 4: Taut Defense
“Sag” is not a term you want to describe your yard’s tarp and cover situation! Keep those tight in order to keep mosquito breeding grounds benched.
