Recently I had the disappointing phone call from a customer who was getting less than satisfactory mosquito control results from our traditional barrier spray. While I never like getting these calls, I find that the work behind solving the problem enjoying and even fun.
The first thing I did was head out to the property. There are typically a limited set of reasons why the mosquito control is less effective than desired. These include the most common exacerbating factor of standing water. Mosquitoes need standing water to breed and the more standing water there is, the larger the breeding ground. More standing water means the perfect nursery for raising new crops of mosquitoes. The second reasons mosquito control may be less effective is because of a different mosquito type.
At this yard I immediately noticed that this yard was particularly wet, which always presents a special challenge when it comes to controlling mosquito populations.
While touring the property I noticed some mosquitoes were a bit different looking than the ones I normally see. I thought, these buggers might just be harder to eliminate, on top of the fact that they have so much water for raising their young. While there, I took a sample for further investigating.
The mystery mosquito
After diligently searching through all of my resources I was not able to conclusively confirm the species of this particular mosquito. After dismantling the mosquito, I sent images to identify.us.com for identification. I also took magnified pictures and photoshopped comparison pictures to another known similar mosquito.
Upon first sight identify.us.com thought it was cattail mosquito – but I knew that couldn’t be true with the markings on the legs being so different. Adding to my confusion at this identification, the wings of the unknown mosquito were also quite different looking.
We still are not certain of the exact identity of this mystery mosquito, we are working diligently to identify it so that we can figure out exactly what kind it is, what it’s typical behavior is and how to eliminate it. And when we figure it out, we will be sure to let you know so that you can keep an eye out for this elusive mosquitoes.
