Wave 3 News has reported mosquitoes infected with West Nilein three different zip codes. Mosquito season is at its peak and West Nile is now a part of that.

As the earth seems to be heating up, it’s hard to say exactly when the season will end, but these pesky mosquitoes are going to hang on as long as they can. And now that West Nile has been detected it’s imperative that you protect yourself. Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness tells us that even though only 3 zip codes have reported the disease, it indicates its presence throughout the community. You must take precaution no matter where you are.

Protect Yourself in the Outdoors and at Home

The presence of West Nile virus doesn’t mean you have to barrier yourself indoors until winter, it simply means you need to be careful. There have yet to be any reported human cases, but no one wants to be first. Often people don’t even show symptoms but 1% of the people that contract West Nile becomes very sick with encephalitis or meningitis. There is no way of knowing if you could become that one, so preventing mosquito bites is where the focus lies. There are simple things that you can do.

  • Choose your clothing wisely. If temperatures permit, long sleeves, long pants, and socks are recommended. You can also mist your clothing with permethrin.
  • Wear repellent that has been approved by the FDA. The best choices are those that contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Choose your outdoor times wisely as well. Mosquitoes or generally more active during dusk and dawn. Plan your activities accordingly.
  • Mosquito-proof your home. Check screens for holes, make sure screen doors close tightly, clear outside areas of standing water. Reducing breeding grounds around the home and entrance in the home will certainly lessen the chances for bites at home.

You Don’t Have to Fight the Battle Against Mosquitoes Alone

All of the above are necessary steps in protection against mosquitoes, especially when you are out in areas where you have no control over your environment.
