NY Could See New Funding for Lyme Disease Research

December 20, 2023

Every year summer comes around, and people throughout NY flock to the outdoors to enjoy the warmest time of year. Unfortunately, though, many don’t take the proper precautions to defend against the creatures that can do us harm in nature. In particular, ticks are of huge concern in our region for a few important reasons. As most know, ticks are one of the most common parasites we can encounter in the woods and our yards. These tiny arachnids are highly adept at latching onto unsuspecting victims and collecting blood from their hosts. Ticks are incredibly good at avoiding detection due to their painless bite and their minuscule size, and they can remain attached to their host for up to 10 days! And it gets worse.

Lyme disease is abundant in our region

As if stealing your blood wasn’t bad enough, ticks are known to transmit various dangerous diseases that can be extremely detrimental to your health. Of particular concern in our region, and across the nation, is Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease. According to estimates, ticks are responsible for infecting somewhere between 300,000 to 400,000 people every year, making tackling our tick problem a top priority. Fortunately, lawmakers have taken note of troubling Lyme disease trends, and progress appears to be on the horizon.

Legislation addressing Lyme disease in NY is here

In a new law signed with bipartisan support, residents of NY will now have the option to voluntarily check a box on their taxes to fund education, research, and prevention in the state. New York has the second highest rate of Lyme disease in the country, so this bill was driven by necessity. Lyme disease is also notoriously difficult to diagnose, so lawmakers have begun to call for additional funding that will go towards better identification practices and research. In the meantime, make sure you are defended against Lyme disease with help from the professionals.
